To, Maurice, David, Steven, Tracy and John -
I'd like to send a note to my friend David in suport of his gay lifestyle and to Maurice as well as Steven and Tracy. All of you have taught me to love in a whole different way.
You see I was born in the NC Mountains, a true hillbilly girl, and yes - I was brought up around so much hate regarding diversity.
In high school my son was invited to some function by Maurice and I confronted him that I did not feel comfortable!!!! It was that day that I began to learn something that changed my entire way of thinking.
Maurice was normal - just like me. Because he was gay did not mean he was going to pounce on my son and inflict his 'gayness' onto my son. He was just a normal person showing normal respect to people and it was ME who was disrespectful.
I spent many hours talking to Maurice and he taught me so many things. Then he introduced me to his friend David. He said Pam - you are going to have SO MUCH IN COMMON with David. You two think alike in a lot of ways, and it was true. David is like another son of mine. Then I met Steven and his partner Tracy thru work and love them just as much. I love you guys and then there's my friend John aka "Summer" who showed me the fun side of gay people in his dress up character and stage performances.
Please if you are reading this and are not convinced that you should think in a more diverse way....go buy the movie "Prayers for Bobby." I want you to watch that movie as if it were you and this Bobby was your son. If at the end of that true story you do not feel changed in some way....well I believe it may be too late for you to live in the way life was intended to be.
