It seems like people are always saying, “For brothers, you guys aren’t very much alike,” and let’s face it—they’re right. You’re tall, blonde, and incredibly commonsensical. I’m short, dark-haired and have my head in the clouds more often than a bird—We couldn’t be more different.
It seems like our differences always out-ranked similarities all through our childhood, too. I mean, we were typical brothers: got along when we wanted to, annoyed each other more often than not, and definitely preferred friendship of others over each other. We were as close as people with complete opposite lives could ever be.
Then, years later, we both came out of the closet.
I’ll never forget the moment you admitted that you’d been dealing with my exact same feelings, emotions, and questions all while living in the bedroom right next to me! We may have spent most of that evening talking about our concerns over mom and dad’s reaction (Seriously, we couldn’t ask for better parents!), but that dark car ride home in the middle of the summer became a time warp. We were both adults when you confessed, but suddenly we became kids again and all I wanted to do what protect my little brother from the frustration I had endured while dealing with my own sexuality.
But like the confident person you’ve always been, you’ve handled your new identity like a pro and, over time, our brotherhood has become a friendship I’d never thought I’d experience. I’ve never known someone any better (We even have a freaking language of our own!), and I can’t imagine finding someone that I’d let bluntly call me out on anything and everything I say. Face it, you’re stuck with me A.K.A. BBFL’s: Best Bros For Life.
The truth: you’ve always been my best friend and—more importantly—you are my idol. Your poise, focus, compassion, love, motivation, humor, and success inspire me to be the best I can be. Sure, we may always take two very separate paths towards different destinations in life, but this big brother will always be cheering you on no matter where life takes you.
I love you and couldn’t be more proud of who’ve you become. Thank you…
Your Big Bro Byron
